My Own Personal Stylist Part 1 – Discover Personal Style

My Own Personal Stylist Part 1 – Discover Personal Style

Almost everyone develops a preferred way of dressing, this style is usually a reflection of our inner personality, which is why we call it personal style. The clothes we wear should make us feel happy, align with personality, goals, budget, lifestyle, and be the external expression of who we are.

Where we go wrong;

  • Dressing to please others
  • Clothing that overpowers who we are
  • Staying in the same style/colour rut for our entire lives
  • Wearing only what we have purchased on sale
  • Wearing clothes ‘that will do’
  • Not listening to the ‘inner’ voice and having the courage to wear what we love

Discover Your Style

By the time we reach our early forties, most people they have discovered a style that feels comfortable and looks good. No longer wearing the latest ‘must have item’ we realise that there is more to life than fashion. We have discovered a few items that do look great, so we keep purchasing these but if we aren’t careful, we can become stuck in a fashion rut. How often have you been shopping and return home with a shirt that is great and matches the other 6 shirts of the same style we already own?

As an image professional and involved in the auditing of wardrobes, I am often amazed at how many pairs of black pants a person can own. Really, do we need a pair for each day of the month!

If this sounds like you, then YOU need a style, image and colour consultation, TODAY

This can raise us out of the rut and back on the style highway. Imagine the possibilities and potential new styles and colours that will also look great on you, expand your horizons. So start styling and keep smiling!

Have I found my inner style?

Let’s go to our wardrobes and ask the tough questions of our clothes

  • Do I feel happy and comfortable wearing this?
  • Are my clothes projecting and image which gives a true impression of my personality?
  • Are my clothes working for me?
  • Am I wearing 100% of my wardrobe?

If you answered ‘yes’ then you are well on the way to having your own style.

If you answered ‘no’ then its time to begin the journey of self style discovery.

Where does one start?

  • Purchase a variety of fashion magazines ( or read/borrow from the local library) to assist with a study of the different fashion looks that are current.
  • Practice window shopping, look at the displays in various clothing stores. Who and what type of person is the store hoping to attract?
  • Watch TV shows, to see what is being worn by the actors, as this is one way the director gets the personality of the character across to the audience.
  • So many women are influenced by the fashion sitcom, Sex in the City or Desperate Housewives. Most of the time these women look amazing however, its not really affordable fashion or appropriate attire for us to wear in our day to day lives, walking around in 9 inch heels. Look for clothes styles, that you can actually wear.
  • Experiment and try on as many different styles of clothing as you can. Choose styles that not only look good on you but that feel right with your personality and choose clothes in styles that you feel are not you – this helps in the self discovery process.
  • Purchase a black art book which you can use to fill with pictures of clothes, accessories, hairstyles and make-up looks that make you say ‘wow’. Cut out the pictures and create pages of collage fashion.

There are seven main style personalities. Classic, Feminine, Dramatic, Natural, Creative, Elegant and Sexy

While we all have one inherent personal style, one that is the real you, at times we need to dress in a different style for school, work, climate, culture etc.. Understanding our core personality style enables us to package ourselves in such a way that truly reflects who we are, and allows us to adapt to a variety of styles, for different occasions and to express all aspects of our personality. So not only do we look good, we feel great, lose our self consciousness, and increase feelings of confidence and self worth. Once we can remove all the little niggling insecurities of clothing, we can kick back, relax and allow ourselves to shine.
